Tooth Tip – Children’s Brushing Tips

Children’s Brushing Tips

Most 2-3 year old’s don’t like brushing their teeth, but it is critical. The most important thing to do, is be consistent. Don’t make brushing teeth an option. Don’t let young children brush on their own. Do let your children take a turn and hold the brush, but make sure that an adult brushes the teeth actively as least once a day (twice is better.)

Half of the benefit of brushing is applying fluoride toothpaste to the teeth. Fluoride toothpaste is inexpensive, safe and an effective way to prevent cavities. Spitting can be challenging at first, but with practice it gets easy. Start with just a smear of toothpaste, brush for 10 seconds and repeat. No need to add more toothpaste, just repeat the brushing and spitting cycles till all the teeth have been brushed and then go to bed. No more food or drink after brushing, unless it’s water. Try to make it fun and provide positive reinforcement or a reward.

Try to make them laugh and tickle them to open. Go on a “sugar bug” hunt when brushing and find some!”
